Kukuom Gold Concession

The Kukuom area among several other areas along the Sefwi Gold Belt has been identified by Geologists, as a highly prospective gold district with favourability to host economic gold mineralization.

Climate, Topography and Drainage.

The annual rainfall is in the range of 1500-2000mm and the minimum and maximum temperatures are about 22 ° C and 36 ° C respectively with an average annual temperature of about 29 C and high relative humidity. A major season occurs from April to July followed by a minor one from September through October.

The concession area has low relief with an average of 150m above mean sea level. The Tano River provides major drainage to the south with numerous tributaries displaying a dendritic drainage pattern. The vegetation is of the tropical rain forest type but is mostly disturbed by farming activities leading to less densely wooded secondary forest type vegetation About 75 % of the farmable area of the concession is now covered in cocoa plantations. The rest are reserved for foodstuffs such as corn, plantain, bananas, oil palm, tomatoes, okra, garden eggs. pineapples, cabbage, carrots, cassava, yams, and rice, Citrus fruits, avocados and papayas are also grown.

Exploration

Gold exploration is the lifeblood of gold mining with respect to the discovery of new ounces even within a single clearly demarcated licensed gold mining concession. At Danampco, we stand apart for our ability to drive value by consistently replacing mineral depletion within a specific harvested opened-pit or shaft at its operations in order to discover higher quality ounces. Enhanced gold prospecting or exploration endeavors poses many important advantages or benefits, key amongst them is that, despite a specific operational projected gold mining life-span, for example, a 15years projected gold exploitation tenure of a particular operational gold mine, can be well extended for another 15 or even 30years, if further efficient prospecting or exploration works are undertaken on the gold concession and new discoveries are made.

Exploration on the most prospective properties on a given licensed mining concession is key to unlocking and creating value for investors and stakeholders, by providing new platforms or trends for production and achieving growth. Our generative exploration program is focused on developing high-quality milestones in the Company’s extensive portfolio of projects in mining-friendly jurisdictions in Ghana, where Danampco Limited has deep exploration and technical expertise and foothold.

Location & Access

The concession is located at Kukuom, 80km SW of Sunyani the capital of Ahafo Region. It can also be access by air from Accra the capital of Ghana to Sunyani. Then by road from Sunyani to Kokuom. The concession covers a total area of 156.24km² (744 Blocks) and is located in the Asunafo South, Asunafo North and Asutifi Districts of the Ahafo Region of Ghana. Kukuom is the biggest settlement within the concession with other settlement such as Dantano , Asufufo , Tanaso , Sienkyem , Siana and Yank Ye No. 1 & 2. The concession lies within the geographical coordinates of 6 ° 37 ‘ to 6 ° 45 ‘ 00N and longitude 2 ° 22 ‘ to 2 ° 30’W.

Gold Production in Ghana

Gold operations in Ghana are in two sectors. The large scale sector and the small-scale sector. Usually, the large scale sectors are involved in the hard rock mining with modernized sophisticated implements and machineries, whereas the small scale sector, mostly comprises of a maximum of 25acres land, forming one mining concession and are mostly involved in alluvial (Streams/rivers banks) mining.

Ghana presents a number of opportunities in the mining sector, especially in the gold production industry. With a production of 80.50 trillion tonnes of gold in 2008, Ghana’s production stayed stable over the course of 2014, totalling 90 metric tons ranking Ghana the second largest gold producer in Africa, after South Africa and tenth in the world after Uzbekistan on the eight position and Mexico the ninth.

Ghana’s annual gold revenues rose to $3.52 billion in 2017, a 10.2-percent increase from 2016. This is thought to be the result of greater output from the country’s mines, as per the Ghana Chamber of Mines. Indeed, large miners in the country have been producing impressive quantities of gold.

Ghana has become the largest gold producer in Africa, toppling South Africa in a recent data released by the World Bank.
Ghana exported 158 tonnes of gold in 2018, about 15% increase over the previous year with the numbers quadrupling in recent times.

Ghana has thus dethroned South Africa, which produced 139.3 tonnes and returned to the high volumes of the 1980s.Ghana as per historical accounts boast of huge mineral resources like copper, bauxite, manganese, diamonds, timber and in not so recent times, a buoyant oil and gas industry. The most thriving heavily depended on for the Country’s economic prospects is the ever thriving gold small and large scale mining industry.

In some areas, due to soil erosion and leaching, desertification has occurred. Many of these small scale miners use certain substances and chemical compositions such as mercury, to extract gold from the sediments and this has resulted in contamination of drinking water as well as groundwater. This usually causes a fraction of the indigenes in mining communities with these negative tendencies to suffer health related issues, ranging from respiratory tract infections of all sorts, diarrhoea, abdominal deficiencies, optical, cardio and cancerous diseases largely owed to the usage of these chemicals such as mercury, cyanide among others.

This adversely does not spare the surrounding flora and fauna. An important reason why we at Danampco adhere to the usage of modern and environmentally friendly methods to prospect and exploit gold, by mining responsibly, which greatly reduce ill effects on the environment and communities. We go a step further by organizing educational workshop for most of the small scale miners, educating and supporting them to switch to more modern and environment-friendly gold extraction methods. This wholesome endeavour however demands funding and hence, the need for foreign investments to back government’s effort in this regard.

Brief Gold Smelting Process

Gold smelting is the process by which impurities are removed from the gold by way of converting it from its solid state or particles to liquid. This is accomplished by using pressure, heat and certain chemicals. Once the process is complete, the smelter is left with a remarkably pure material. The first step of the smelting process involves processing the raw ore. The gold material is pulverized into fine particles. These particles are then placed into a furnace that has reached a temperature above gold’s melting point. This burns off many of the impurities found in gold but not all.

The second step involves the introduction of chemicals to separate the pure gold from other minerals and metals. The Chemical causes the melted gold to coagulate and form pure nuggets. Once the gold ore and scrap gold have been refined, the gold is placed back into the furnace to be melted one more time. This pure gold is melted then poured into a mould to form ingots. Ingots are essentially gold bars and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This pure gold can be used to make a variety of electrical components, jewellery or it can simply be kept as a store of value.

Our Productions and Quality Controls Department ensures our company’s quality controls standards are met in the conversion of gold ore to the gold bars.
